It turns out your grumbling about the amount of Utah construction work on highways, freeways, and bridges was correct.

The Utah Department of Transportation was very busy in 2024.

In summary, according to its detailed press announcement (distributed yesterday morning), UDOT

  • Completed 138 projects statewide last year,
  • Spending roughly $1 billion in the process.

Noted below are Utah's five most expensive completed UDOT projects in 2024.

$750 million for West Davis Highway work

According to UDOT's news release, "... this is a new, 16-mile, four-lane divided highway ... that runs from I-15 near Glovers Lane in Farmington to the future extension of SR-193 and 4500 West in West Point, Utah."

UDOT spent $750 on this project in 2024.

Additionally, the "... project also improved opportunities for active transportation by adding nearly 10 miles of new trails and connecting several existing regional trails, like Emigration Trail with the Legacy Parkway Trail."

The project also protected 1,110 acres of wetlands near the Great Salt Lake.

$78.3 million for an I-15 interchange in Washington City

UDOT completed "... a new interchange on I-15 at Main Street in Washington City (near St. George)," spending $78.3 in the process.

According to the UDOT news release, "This project also widened I-15, created a new travel lane in each direction and improved access to the rapidly-expanding area."

$18.6 million for improvement work on 300 South in Provo

UDOT-contracted crews

  • "... Repaved 300 South (in Provo) ...
  • "Replaced infrastructure in the area (storm drains, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, driveway access),
  • "Added safety features (a signalized intersection at 400 East, enhanced lighting and a crosswalk at 200 East), and
  • "Improved active transportation by adding
    "A pedestrian (path) and"
    "Bike paths."

Total 2024 cost for this work in Provo? $18.6 million.

$17.8 million for I-15 bridge repairs in Nephi

For this maintenance project, UDOT spent $17.8 million to

  • "... Replace the driving surface on two Nephi bridges,
  • "... Rehabilitate 80 lane miles of pavement (in/near Nephi), (and)
  • "... Complete various repairs on seven other (bridges in) the area."

Total 2024 cost for this work in/near Nephi? $17.8 million.

$16 million for Pleasant Grove Boulevard intersection updates

Under the direction of UDOT, the agency spent $16 million in 2024 to "... enhance traffic flow and access to I-15 from the intersection of Pleasant Grove Boulevard and North County Boulevard (in Pleasant Grove, Utah)."

Specifically, UDOT

  • "Added more left turns,"
  • "Widened Pleasant Grove Boulevard, and"
  • "Added new traffic signals to the north and east of the intersection."

Additionally,

  • "Crews also resurfaced North County Boulevard from 2000 West to State Street in American Fork, and"
  • "Upgraded curbs, gutters, sidewalks and landscaping."

Nope. You're not Nuts! 2024 was Crazy-Busy for UDOT.

And based upon what I'm hearing, 2025 is going to be an even busier construction year for the Utah Department of Transportation than last year.

So get ready.
