The University of Utah just announced that it garnered nearly $700 million in research funding in fiscal 2024 (ended 30 June 2024).

According to the UofU news release announcing the FY 2024 research funding results, the Salt Lake City-based institution secured $691 million in research funding across such disciplines as "... energy research, rural healthcare, environmental studies, artificial intelligence, cancer treatment, mental health support, technological innovation, and more."

When broken down, 65% of the total research portfolio (approximately $449.2 million) was funded by United States federal government partners, including

  • The National Institutes of Health (NIH),
  • The National Science Foundation (NSF),
  • The Department of Energy (DOE), and
  • Veteran Affairs,

among others.

Conversely, so-called industry grants in FY24 (funds provided by business partners) accounted for 14% of the total (~$96.4 million), while funding from partner universities accounted for 8% of the total C.

The balance of FY24 research funding (~$89.8 million) was provided by "... state government entities and other key agencies."

During fiscal 2024 over "... 7,500 university employees were compensated through research dollars... (with) more than $850 million in (UofU employee) wages (paid by research funding during) the past four years."
