BREAKING NEWS: With Funding in Place, Construction has Begun on Clearway Energy's $605 Million Battery Energy Storage Portfolio in Utah's Iron and Beaver Counties

San Francisco, California-based Clearway Energy Group has closed a multi-bank financing package of $605 million allowing it to begin construction of its new multi-site, 320-megawatt Honeycomb battery storage portfolio based in Utah's Iron County and Beaver County.
According to the Clearway news release, its Honeycomb portfolio will be "... comprise(d of) four battery energy storage systems ... projects (located) adjacent to (existing) operating solar energy portfolio(s) owned and operated by Clearway (in Utah)."

Each of these Honeycomb battery energy storage systems (BESS) will use four-hour, 80MW Tesla batteries, meaning that, in concert, the Honeycomb portfolio will collectively store up to 1,280 Megawatt Hours of dispatchable power in Utah for primary use within the state.
According to newly elected freshman U.S. Senator John Curtis (R-UT), "Utah has long been a leader in energy innovation.
"The Honeycomb BESS portfolio is another step forward in delivering clean, reliable, and dispatchable power to our communities. By expanding battery storage capacity right here in our state, Clearway ... is driving solutions that strengthen both our economy and our environment.”
Construction of the Honeycomb BESS portfolio is slated for completion by 09 September 2026.
When completed, Clearway will have a total of nearly 870MW of battery storage capacity in Utah.

Members of Clearway's bank consortium that are funding this Honeycomb portfolio buildout include
- KeyBanc Capital Markets,
- CoBank ACB,
- DNB Bank ASA,
- U.S. Bancorp Impact Finance,
- National Australia Bank,
- Bank of America, and
- Norddeutsche Landesbank Girozentrale.
Under a 20-year toll agreement with PacifiCorp, Clearway has contracted to provide the utility with dispatchable, reliable power via the Honeycomb BESS portfolio.
